                                   UNITED NATIONS                           The   United Nations   ( UN ) is an   intergovernmental organization   tasked to promote international co-operation and to create and maintain international order. A replacement for the ineffective   League of Nations , the organization was established on 24 October 1945 after   World War II   in order to prevent another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51   member states ; there are now 193. The   headquarters of the UN   is in   Manhattan ,   New York City , and is subject to  extraterritoriality .                                         BADMINTON                     Badminton   is a racquet sport played using   racquets   to hit a   shuttlecock   across a   net . Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles"  and "doubles". Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court.                      Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net.
