LGBT's and CINEMAS
Today, 9 January 2017 , again the issue of homosexuality has arised. Supreme Court has decided to take a review on the section 377 of the constitution which is against homosexuality. We the people should be aware of all these issues. Hence I am discussing this issue with you.
Cinema is the perfect medium through which such issues reach the common people. Perhaps there are not many Indian cinemas which discuss such issues but there are some which have displayed it very beautifully such as Page 3, Fire, Aligarh, Margarita with a straw and Marathi films like Natrang are some of the examples.
'Page 3' is a movie directed by Madhur Bhandarkar which shows the lifestyle of celebrities through the eyes of a female entertainment journalist. It is a story of three girls who try to live decently in an indecent society. 'Fire' is the first Indian film about lesbianism released in 1997. It deals with the loving sexual relationship between two young Indian women. This movie at the time of release had to go under certain issues due to its controversial story. 'Aligarh' is another such movie which talks about the life of a professor of Aligarh university. He gets suspended from the University for being homosexual. 'The eyes of others, our prisons; their thoughts, our cages' sums up the whole movie. 'Margarita with a straw' is the current such movie which frankly discusses about the young woman's interest in sex. It is a story of a girl who loves music, romance and people but has a disease called cerebral palsy which is a movement disorder. 'Natrang' is a Marathi film which tells about a poor farm labourer who has to work in Tamasha and which becomes his only source of income.
There are many personalities in the film industries who have shown that being a LGBT doesn't matter if a person has some good qualities in him. For eg. Samuel Smith popularly known as Sam Smith is an English singer and a song-writer who is the first gay oscar winner. While accepting the award he said,"I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day." A couple of lesbians acting in a series named Pretty Little Liars is also very famous. Vikram Seth is another example of who is an Indian novelist and poet.
Hence it is not our gender but our creativity and our character which decides our identity.
