AURANGABAD
TOWARDS SMART CITY
Aurangabad is a city in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state in
India. The city is a tourism hub and has many historical monuments including
Bibi ka Maqbara, Daulatabad fort, Ajanta-Ellora caves and Panchakki etc. The
city is famous for having 52 gates. So it is also known as ‘City of Gates’. But
is Aurangabad a smart city or is it trying to become?
The government is trying to develop the historic places first
as it is often visited by tourists. Many bridges are built to avoid traffic and
to make travelling easier. There is also a plan to make the Jalna road in six
lanes. Various CCTV cameras are going to be installed at different places.
Public transportation will be made available to all citizens. 24 hours power
supply and drinking water facilities will be made available. Shendra industrial
area will be converted into smart city. But there are also the arguments of the
corporation that there is no money left for all these works.

On the other side there is a severe issue of
sewage and garbage going on in the city. The residents of Naregaon where all
the garbage is dumped are having many complaints as they have to suffer from
many diseases due to that. Before making roads and developing city they should
pay attention to such issues first. Aurangabad
has the potential to be the next destination of PM’s ambition ‘Make in India’.
However the city has witnessed poor progress so far as implementation of smart
city mission is concerned.
