Do we need censorship?

           DO WE NEED CENSORSHIP?


         

 Censorship means suppression or prohibition to any part of book, film, news, etc. which is unacceptable and is a threat to security. Although the Constitution of India guarantees the freedom of expression but it also places some restrictions on the content to maintain religious peace and harmony. But is censorship really necessary?
             
               Some say that it is needed because if censorship does not exist we can get exposed to many things. If it is not present, children see inappropriate content which have adverse effect on their minds. It can create a negative impact on minds of people. Censoring the content can provide stability to the society. It can also lead to violence in society.     
        
           
         The other side of this is that since internet has become widespread we can access to the porn or any such things anytime and anywhere. It limits our creativity and also hide truths. It also keeps us away from harsh but realities of today’s world. Any censored content can even be found somewhere else.

              Some are of the opinion that films should have censorship because audio-visual can have stronger influence than printed word. Censorship is a great tool if applied correctly, the question is how to apply it effectively. Total censorship and absolute freedom can both be problematic.

Section 377

                    Section 377                   Section 377 of IPC i.e. Indian Penal Code dates back to 1861 which criminalizes sexual activities between same sex i.e. homosexuality. It states that whoever has sexual intercourse with any man, woman or animal which is against the order of nature shall be punished with imprisonment for life. Some people believe that homosexuality is against Indian culture, against nature and against science.           When the High Court of Delhi decriminalized it in 2009, the Supreme court gave a judgement that the  amending of section 377 should be left on the parliament and the judiciary should not interfere in it.
