History for what?

               HISTORY FOR WHAT?

History is the study of the past. It helps us to solve our present problem and take a proper decision by observing and understanding the past events. The word ‘history’ comes from Greek which means enquiry. The study of history is classified as a part of humanities or sometimes of social sciences. Historians who have studied the past events have recorded them by writing and have used monuments, inscriptions and pictures as their sources.

There are three kinds of history-
  • ·      Pre - history
  • ·      Ancient history
  • ·      Modern history

Prehistory is the history where there are no written records. In such case the information is recovered by studying the paintings, drawings, carvings and other arts.

Studying History is important because it helps us to understand our past which in turn helps us to understand our present. It is said that history repeats itself. By studying the successes and failures in the past we may learn from our mistakes and will avoid repeating them further. History helps us to understand people and society. It also provides us identity. Studying the past stories also inspires us in many ways. History teaches us values. History makes us a better decision maker. It is also said that, ‘One who controls the past controls the future’.
