Democracy in India

             DEMOCRACY IN INDIA

Democracy is a type of government in which the people choose their rulers by voting them in elections. In this, people can participate directly or indirectly through their representatives. Democracy is a government of the people, by the people and for the people. So in democracy people are the power and its success and failure depend on them. India is the largest democratic country in the world.
Such governments can be either unitary or federal. India has a federal type of government. In democracy all are equal before the law. Democracy gives personal freedom to every citizen and stands against any suppression of thought or speech. It aims at the welfare of the common people. It enhances the dignity of individual and improves the quality of decision making.

Every form of government, whether democratic or dictatorship, has both advantages and disadvantages. It is seen that the representative is often a power-loving person. Due to lack of educated voters, they vote the powerful people who use  them for their profit. Democratic government do not take quick decisions. But there is one respect in which it is certainly better than its alternatives: Democratic government is legitimate government. It may be slow and less efficient but it is people’s own government.
There is no fixed definition of a good democracy. A good democracy is what we think it is and what we wish to make it. For democracy to survive in vast country like India, it is necessary that all citizens stand united and play their respective roles towards the progress of the nation.
