Indian Space Research
Organization(ISRO) is a space agency which was created in 1969. Its
headquarters are situated in Bangalore, Karnataka. It was established by the efforts of India’s
first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and scientist Vikram Sarabhai. It is managed
by department of science, Government of India. Its primary spaceport is Satish
Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
The vision of
ISRO is to harness space technology for national development. ISRO also
maintains the communication satellites(INSAT) and remote sensing
satellites(IRS) for fast and reliable communication across the country and
earth. Its functions also includes broadcasts, weather forecasting, disaster
management, navigation etc.
The
first satellite of ISRO was Aryabhata, which was launched by Soviet Union on 19
April 1975. It was named after the mathematician Aryabhata. It also developed
two other rockets Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle(PSLV) for polar orbits and
Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle(GSLV) for geostationary orbits. It sent
Chandrayaan -1, lunar orbiter on 22 October
2008 and Mars orbiter, Mars Orbiter Mission(MOM), which successfully entered
Mars orbit on 24 September 2014. It made India the first nation to succeed on
its first attempt.
ISRO is the
fourth agency in the world as well as the first agency in Asia to successfully
reach Mars orbit. The Department of Atomic Energy founded by Homi Bhabha
provided funding for space research. ISRO plans to launch a new generation
Earth observation satellite in the future. It will also undertake the
development of new launch vehicles and spacecrafts.
